The Life and Work of Richard J. King
Ruth Sheehy has recently published a finely illustrated book on the life and work of King exploring his career from his apprenticeship to the famed stained-glass artist Harry Clarke (1889-1931), to his design work on Irish postage stamps and his illustrations and artwork for ‘The Capuchin Annual’. Her book explores the relationship between religion, perceptions of Irish identity and nationalism in the artist’s secular work of the 1930s and 1940s.
A collection of original artwork by King is held in the Irish Capuchin Archives. An article by Ruth Sheehy on King’s legacy was recently published in the ‘Irish Times’ and can be read at https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/after-harry-clarke-the-forgotten-work-of-richard-king-nationalist-and-modernist-1.4275422 More information on her newly published book on King’s life and work can be found at https://www.peterlang.com/view/title/61769?tab=toc
