Statement from the Provincial Minister of the Irish Capuchin Franciscans on the Passing of Pope Francis

It is with profound sorrow that we, the Irish Capuchin Franciscans, join the global community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a shepherd of compassion and humility, who returned to the house of the Father this morning. His life was a testament to the Gospel’s call to serve the poor and marginalized, a mission that resonated deeply with our own Franciscan charism.

We recall with immense gratitude his visit to Ireland in 2018, a moment of great significance for our nation and for our Capuchin fraternity. Among the many places he graced with his presence, his visit to the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin remains etched in our hearts. There, he met with those experiencing homelessness and hardship, offering not only words of encouragement but the warmth of his presence. His embrace of the poor was a living embodiment of the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, who saw Christ in the faces of the most vulnerable.

Pope Francis’ choice of name upon his election was no mere formality—it was a declaration of his commitment to the ideals of St. Francis of Assisi, our founder. Like St. Francis, he championed simplicity, care for creation, and a radical love for the poor. His papacy was marked by a tireless pursuit of justice, mercy, and fraternity, reminding the world that true greatness lies in service.

As we bid farewell to this extraordinary leader, we pray that his legacy will continue to inspire hearts across the world. May his soul rest in the eternal peace of Christ, and may his example guide us ever closer to the Gospel’s call to love and serve.

Fraternally in Christ,

Br. Sean Kelly OFM,Cap
